I have mailed Fabrice a while back (ca. December 2012) to ask if he'd consider open sourcing his code.
he said that he was not planning to open soirce it and that he was too busy to clean it up to his standards to release it. I offered to help but he did not seem open to open source it.
in the meantime i have been recreating his code with my own solution, and have full working 8086 code but got stuck on segmentation and paging. hopefulöy will resume this soon.

Hi,

If I were to package this for a Linux distro, which license should I put in the package file? Copyright Fabrice Bellard? Is he okay with this?

If possible, please add a "LICENSE" or "COPYING" file that clarifies this.

Best regards,
Alexander Rødseth

I'm not a lawyer, but as far as I can tell: if Fabrice Bellard should not be happy with this project, he can ask for it to be removed, since it's based on his copyrighted code.

If it is not based on his code, but is a complete rewrite, please release it under an open source license.

Thank you. And thanks for your work! This is a really cool project.

I've contacted Fabrice Bellard about this. Basically if he wants it taken down I will comply with his wishes, but hopefully he'll appreciate the pedagogic value. I'll update the readme/license information with whatever he wants if/when he gets back to me.

I had no idea more than a few people would ever be interested in looking at what was essentially a weekend project to understand the original. Had I known it was ever going to get noticed by a larger number of people I would have contacted him long ago before posting it publicly.

Mr. Bellard has granted me permission to keep this posted here, so long as it is subject to his original restrictions of non-commercial use and limited redistribution subject to his approval. So if you want to republish this anywhere I'd recommend seeking his permission.

I imagine he'd rather you wait for him to release the proper readable-source version of the codebase.

Have a look at https://github.com/asmblah/jemul8/ for an alternative x86 emulator under MIT license.
