Alerting system should be Nagios-flavour-agnostic (i.e. icinga vs. nagios vs. whatever should be the user's choice)

If we go down this road, we'll immediately be more popular. Given the crap I went through this morning where I rebooted my Observium server I got about 200 alerts when it came back up about fan speed on all of our switches and routers. I've never had that issue with my Nagios install :)

How does Nagios handle alerts?
is there a generic call?
or does one have to actively populate Nagios' DB in order to let Nagios itself decide to alert (or not)?

In nagios you define a contact group, add a contact and define a time period. You then allocate either the contact or group to a device or service so when it goes down then that contact or group will be alerted.
