possible way is to use SWT_AWT.new_Shell(..).

 Display display = new Display();
            Shell shell = SWT_AWT.new_Shell(display, canvas);

I didn't try to embed this in AWT before, but it should work on Windows and 
Linux. Also, I think AWT and SWT are not compatible on Mac.
