This API was designed to treat failures as cache misses rather than raising exceptions that the parent code then has to deal with. This is not a decision that can be changed at this point, too many consumers rely on the current operation.

Right and I understand your concerns. How about changing the behavior with a new major version?

This module is in maintenance-only mode, so I don't forsee this changing any time soon. I appreciate you thoughts on it.
