FYI (and I suspect you already know) you still need to patch in a few things to enable the out of tree build, e.g.

shows that Debian is applying the base, map and standalone patches to enable out of tree builds.
One thing I tripped over trying to build aufs standalone for the Debian kernel is that the patches which Debian imported for the kernel I had were for 4.4-rc7 or so but the final versions in the aufs4.4 branch export a few extra things, so I needed to roll the aufs back to the point which corresponded to the imported patches. I think this won't affect moby since things will necessarily be in sync.
