I agree, having the client run on the server node is ideal. I'm not sure if there are any best practices or naming conventions around.

Do you have any thoughts or experience here?

These issues certainly sound like a bug and would be happy to accept pull requests.

I don't think there are. Given that Logstash itself is just a .jar distro, I think most people so far rolled their own.

In a way, this cookbook has a good chance at becoming the best practice ;)

Personally, I used to use a previous version of this cookbook, with a ton of hacks, and had a different naming convention. I think what we have now is very good and I'll gladly standardize on it.

The only thing missing from the cookbook is being able to load all config files from conf.d. I am going to commit what I have, but I'm going to need a bit of help with the init scripts: for some reason bash is not agreeing with me this week :D
