This would be feasable with zip file downloaded over http(s). Also I'd like to be able to build lit packages directly from upstream.
lit make github://creationix/jack # download the jack repo as a zip and build it
lit make lit://luvit/luvit # download the latest luvit
lit make github://creationix/[email protected] # Download a tag as zip
lit make lit://luvit/[email protected] # grab from lit at version (matched to latest)
lit make https://example.com/goo/bar.zip # enable arbitrary http urls for zips as wellfrom lit.

Since the github:// prefix is just a template, we could allow other templates in .litconfig perhaps.
github://$user/$name -> https://github.com/$user/$name/archive/master.zip
github://$user/$name@$version https://github.com/$user/$name/archive/$version.zip
