First, some justification as to why scikit-image.color is not sufficient
- very heavy dependency (scikit and scipy are overkill and lotsa MB)
- Requires shuffling axis order to interoperate with rasterio arrays, not a huge deal but a complexity and an opportunity for hard-to-detect bugs
- we want to write optimized loops that do the math without intermediate arrays
- slower than our custom Cython code (at least with RGB<->LCH)
