Maybe I exaggerated a little, when said performance test - since I havent tried to run the original epsg.io site and dont have anything to compare with.
I just took the gml_parser from the latest release and modified it(python not being my main language).
My modifications are here, https://gist.github.com/s093294/6cd8909439b28295b6e3 and the purpose was just to get a fast way to make users able to search for a projection in a form we was doing and needed a little more control that using epsg.io directly.
you can get a free test service, but you will need an microsoft azure subscription. Let me know if you need more info on that. Docs to azure search: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/search-api-2014-10-20-preview/
Azure Search target a response time of 250-300 ms on queries and has options to scale very easily if demands raises. I would be happy to help set it up for epsg.io, but since you already have a working solution - i dont think theres much to gain.
