It looks like we have two options:
-
Allow using the application as root and fix the "freeze".
-
Do not allow users to use the application as root. When they attempt to do so, display an appropriate error message and when the user presses "OK" terminate the application.

I would prefer the first option as this the more logical choice if no technology-related constrains (i.e. dbus & friends) stand in the way.

@stefano-k - I suggest we incorporate https://github.com/NiceandGently/mate-accountsdialog. I've tested it and it works great. The GNOME project also recommended Ubuntu switched to the accountdialog tool in the Ubunut bug report above.
Also, this bug is in the wrong repo, it should be in mate-system-tools.
