As a side note, as I can't test on MATE 1.4.0 anymore, I can testify that under Fedora and openSUSE with MATE 1.5.0 this issue does not exist. We have the current settings:
The screenshot is from a Fedora 18 default installation. Assigning to Stefano who can test this issue with 1.4.0.

This is already fixed in 1.5.0

Stefano, if Mint is running 1.4.0 (openSUSE will start with 1.5.0/1.6.0 and in Fedora 1.5.0 is going live too), we probably should backport a fix for the 1.4.x branch and fix this feature also in 1.4.0.
While for me it's a zero impact bug, I would recon that most users will be looking into this feature, as such we can probably fix this. I also understand that 1.4.0 is using technology that will be obsoleted.
Are there any plans for an update to 1.6.0 in Mint 14 at least ?

Also as a note for future reference: mate-power-manager should have dependencies on upower and pm-utils, specially on pm-utils, otherwise some options won't be there.
