Hi @kmarcus89, I'll be doing some work on this widget next week at the Jupyter widget workshop. I'll look into this.

I might be misunderstanding the question, but I believe this still works. Can you give an example of what you are trying to do?
Here is a screenshot of my interpretation of your question:
- plot a line (and, implicitly, create an new figure via pyplot)
- display the figure
- plot another line on the same figure
from ipympl.
