At the moment I'm looking at setting the size cookie differently as the media query breakpoints are very different to the sizes of images I need (ie they're only full screen on mobiles). Thanks for getting back to me though.

Thanks. I've got my max image width in an array. I'm then getting the current browser size (on load) and finding the nearest match in the max image size array and serving that up as the cookie. Seems to be working pretty well.

Just on an unrelated note, the standard htaccess file didn't work for me and kept giving me a 500 error. I solved it by changing the rewrite rule to:

RewriteRule .*.(gif|jpg)$ adaptive-images.php

Not sure if this will help anyone but there it is.
