Not sure what's up with using vscode through xdg-mime.

You can safely edit the file, or a copy of it with any editor and then run gmailctl diff to get the results. After that you can run gmailctl apply on the file to make the changes in Gmail.

A feature of edit is that it doesn't edit the config file directly, but a copy of it, so that if you abort the editing or you're not happy with the diff, nothing would have changed in the original config. A better workflow for you I think would be:

CFG=~/snap/gmailctl/current/.gmailctl/config.jsonnet
cp ${CFG} ${CFG}.new
code-insiders ${CFG}.new
mv ${CFG}.new ${CFG}
gmailctl apply
