That is a valid question. It would definitely install PHP5.5 on Ubuntu 12.04, but it would require using the PHP5 PPA, and writing a custom cookbook. I am trying to keep maintenance to a minimum and use "off the shelf" components, as it were. With 14.04 LTS coming out in less than 30 days, and supporting PHP5.5 natively, that will be the best route to take.
I just found out that Ubuntu themselves hosts images for Vagrant at https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/vagrant/ and have daily builds 14.04. If you want to try them out and report on the success that would awesome.
So I think my plan right now will be to wait for 14.04's final release, test with their Vagrant images, and update to that.
I'm going to leave this issue open for now, so I remember to do it
from vagrant-lamp.
