In my current PR:
I've addressed this matter by clearing the cache whenever it has been exhausted. Given the situations that cause this to trigger (working with large files several megabytes in size), I don't think the 2MB cache will give us great wins anyway, so I don't think it's a big worry to resolve it this way.
