This is hard. React is a sizable abstraction away from the native browser platform. It doesn't seem practical to slip it into a project without overhauling the build pipeline. It's not flexible and portable like web components.
What if we just rolled our own ES6 native web components (which @billy-hardy once suggested)? And imported the webcomponents.js polyfill?
