Solved—PEBKAC :)

Nothing to do w/ metalsmith-collections in this case—was trying to print the collections object in my swig template like so {{ collections | json }}, which was causing the error.

@jonlong, I am having a similar issue.
Can you explain how in fact you are printing them out?

I'm trying:

{% for person in collections.ourteam %}
  {{person}}
{% endfor %}

and get

events.js:72
        throw er; // Unhandled 'error' event
              ^
RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded

when i use metalsmith-writemetadata i do see that my collection is populated.
