Dave, I'd be game to check into this. I've found myself dealing with a few tricky mod_rewrite situations over the years. One thing I've noticed is getting the cleaner URL w/o a slash at the end to be canonical seems tricky. Is it okay to have http://www.csszengarden.com/045/page5/ be canonical, as long as http://www.csszengarden.com/045/page5 works?

Hmm. So... I have something provisionally working locally. But it has a weakness—it requires all the design folders to be moved into a "/designs/" folder (or another name). I'm guessing that's pretty undesirable?

Never mind, just had to write that out, and of course then I got it working w/o that. Still tweaking local.
