This is the expected behavior. Logging out removes the authentication object from the session, but does not create a new session. Is this causing a problem for you in some way?

Speaking to @jameskleeh on the gitter channel I understand the behaviour better now. We agreed that if I need to invalidate sessions then this can be customised in the SessionLogoutHandler.
Happy for the issue to be closed.
