The key to supporting ADPCM and other formats is to handle the 'straddling' audio packets that go over the 2k boundary required for non-buffered async I/O requests. This means bookkeeping and submitting a few 'bridge' packets.
The other feature not implemented by the sample above is loop-points in the wavebank, which is another level of complication as you may have to refetch blocks, cache them, handle loops small enough to fit into memory, etc.
