I'd say it's a bug. BinaryField isn't listed among the limitations. It handles bytes just fine in other circumstances, and this is a new problem in 1.5.
For my need/encounter I patched CursorWrapper._as_sql_type to return 'VARBINARY' for bytes values and it solved it for me.
I'm likely ignorant of some nuance there, but I can make a PR with my patch to get things started.
For context: I'm working with an external source that stores UUIDs as VARBINARY(16).

I have opened a PR and it's merged to dev. It is the same approach as you mentioned, I think this simple fix will suffice.
