@benrr101 I wasn't able to reproduce the issue of generating a TypeError. As I understand when we reach EOF the number of bytes returned by readinto() should return 0. Do you have specific repro steps that invoked that exception?

After syncing with @benrr101, we determined the only scenario with which a type error can occur is if we read from a non blocking stream which would not be the case in production. To be safe I will take @benrr101's suggestion on moving the statement to after the if not length_read: block.
