Machine and furnace (or whatever) mods can and in my opinion should implement this instead of attempting to support functionality through areas mod.
Areas mod cannot know what exact actions should be allowed without whitelisting exact nodes and exact actions for each node.
Technic for example implements for machines by allowing machine upgrades: insert default wooden chest into machine upgrade slot and machine can be used by other players but some machine configurations stay protected and players still cannot dig machines.
Additionally when implemented by mod that provides machine (or interactive nodes) it also has another upside: it will work with any protection mod. If implemented by areas mod then it wont work with other protection mods and causes confusing protection conflicts (can also become dependent on mod loading order).
