I agree that the variable name (HOSTNAME) is actually misleading.

I had exported HOSTNAME before running docker-compose up.
Did a try now with a variable instead in docker-compos.yml, - "HOSTNAME=our_hostname" - no difference.

I found the root cause and it was all me. :(
While hurrying to get the environment up, I hadn't created the .env file.
I populated it and did my changes and it seems to work just fine.
