Revisiting this issue now, it looks like what I meant is:
If a user invokes add-module-info which references group/artifact combinations that are also declared as dependencies by the current project, then assume that the version numbers are one and the same.
Looking back, I understand that this might not necessarily be intuitive but conceptually speaking I think this will happen a lot, making this default value quite convenient.

Could you elaborate further with a sample pom.xml file as if this feature was implemented?
