Do you have any recollection of why it might "not necessarily" be right to call it in gdb input? As far as I can tell, gdbserver_input() completely consumes the buffer given and isn't holding references to its content.

(Although it does seem to assume that, once a '#' is received, that both checksum bytes will be in the buffer, but is this reliable?)

no. i think i was just expression general confusion about the lwip interface. if it does require the api client to advance the receive window on consuming bytes from the stream, then we certainly should.
