@brandonreavis One thing to look out for is that in the ESRI Shapefile format case, OGR will convert your county_name field to "county_na" (or something like that, due to shapefile's field name length limit) and the user won't find a county_name field when revisiting the file.

Ahh, yeah true.

On the fromJSON() method, I'll add a optional boolean approxOK argument that defaults to false. That way it will throw an error if the names aren't supported by the driver. (Like the OGRLayer.createField method)

Also, now that I think about it more, we should just drop the lyr.fields.create() method since a field definition is not supposed to be modified once its added to a layer. This way, people will have to make a field, set the field width, precision, etc before they add it to the layer and there won't be any confusion.
