Change "password" to your router's wpa2 key and
Change "SSID" to your router's SSID
This works for my router but I haven't tried any other routers.

Ah, that could be the issue. "wpa_cli status" shows I'm using a CCMP cipher, so AES in other words.

While I can't verify if it works or not in Linux at this point with my set up, I can verify it doesn't work with the Wii System menu, so the hardware physically is capable of it, I'm just not sure about the Linux side of things yet.

I suppose it would help if I could write what I'm trying to say accurately. I'll try this again...
In my installation of Debian Wheezy, I can get the Wii to detect the wireless, but I can't connect to it for some reason which I haven't been able to figure out yet. When I run iwlist, it returns information about the available connections. The relevant part I put below. While I can't seem to connect in Debian Wheezy with this Wii console to my wireless for whatever reason, I can however, in the native Wii System Menu, connect there to my 2.4 GHz Master mode WPA2 wireless connection.
IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : CCMP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK

Can you confirm that WPA2 is supported by the b43 hardware? As far as I know, it's not.

For the wired connections put in /etc/network/interfaces.d/eth0:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

(as in any Debian)

I will update next release to include this eth0 file.

Thanks!

I can't confirm if it works at this point or not due to not being able to connect to the network. I can confirm though that wicd sees the network and identifies it correctly as WPA2 though and shows the signal strength fine, but I'm not sure why it's failing to actually connect to it. It could be related to the Dbus error I'm getting on my end with my dated Wheezy installation. I thought I used WPA2 with it in the past with it, but it could've been just WPA I suppose.

I did however notice this: http://www.gc-linux.org/wiki/WL:Wifi_Configuration#WPA2 so I assume it's possible.

AFAIK, some older wireless chipsets can do WPA2 TKIP but not AES, you might want to check that part too.

Will add this info to the README.

neagix avatar neagix commented on July 20, 2024

I have added in README that WPA2 doesn't work with AES, however according to this:
http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/498/~/compatible-wireless-modes-and-wireless-security-types

Wii
Wireless Frequency: 2.4 GHz Frequency
Wireless Modes: 802.11b, 802.11g
Wireless Security Modes: WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES)

It should work. So at this point I do not know anymore... does anybody have any idea of why some modes don't work? Is that a Linux issue or just a hardware limitation? Perhaps the problem is with the 5Ghz?

I can verify it doesn't work with the Wii System menu

Wait, I am getting confused here..it works or not on the Wii hardware? πŸ˜ƒ

For me it does not, either on Wii or Linux. But I didn't try changing my router settings with different combinations.

Closing this as I released v0.3.2 which documents the Wi-fi better. For now I can only ACK that some configurations of Wi-fi do not work..not surprised either.

Today I have verified that WPA2 at 2.4 Ghz does not work; I am pretty sure this is a regression from 2.6 kernels.

Re-opening for the WPA2 issue alone.

from wii-linux-ngx.

neagix avatar neagix commented on July 20, 2024

I verified that it's not a regression from v2.6.32, there I even get "device is not ready".

At least with v3 kernels I get an authentication failed message.

I can get wpa2 @ 2.4GHz to work.......

julenuri avatar julenuri commented on July 20, 2024

I think this bug is because hardware limitations. The wifi adapters fails also in the standard Wii in some WPA2 devices (or when the Wifi have depending which channels).
