I think for now the simplest way is to simply use a simple worker and then pass along an environment variable:
WORKER=1 rake backburner:work
I am not saying this couldn't be made easier in the future and patches are welcome. But closing this for now because I don't think it's a common enough use case. Anyone reading this, re-open with patch and I will strongly consider incorporating it. Thanks!

That is exactly how I solved the issue ultimately: environment variables.
