Branches and tags are used, see the "version number" section http://labix.org/gopkg.in.
Maybe I misunderstand what you are looking for?

Any reference at all will most probably not be supported as it would create significant pain for us all. The full background is the same as for vN.M versions, as explained in detail here.

That said, as @nathany pointed out, both tags and branches are supported, as long as they're properly named per the documentation.
