interestingly this only occurs with my existing Google account,
creating a new account results in expected behaviour.

I ran the sample code using a variety of google accounts (some quite old) and was unable to reproduce.

If anyone happens to experience this again... post the details here and I'll dive in again.

For now the issue remains closed.

This appears to be related to calendar.events method.... if i use a time range then the same dataset does not produce an error.

I ran into the same issue. The line which gave this error was
start_time = xml.at_xpath("gd:when")['startTime']
in event.rb. So some of the google calendar entries do not have "gd:when".
I added a default value like "2010-01-01" for this line and the next line,
and the issue was resolved.
