Is it possible to set a access token to never expire so clients never have to reauth?
Yes, you can.
For example, Facebook doesn't return "expires_in" when the access token never expire.
In rack-oauth2, you just don't set expires_in.
Is this frowned upon in the oauth2 flow?
Of course, it makes some kind of security weakness, but it is YOUR responsibility, not OAuth2 nor rack-oauth2.
So I think you can decide it by yourself.
If you do so, I recommend to allow users manually revoke access tokens.
PS.
Since there are no description about the "never expire" access token, you should describe it in your API document.
