I haven't kept the PKGBUILD in sync with the master branch, which caused the errors when starting the systemd service. I have updated the master branch, the config file and the package on the AUR. If you install the new version from AUR, it should work. If it still doesn't work, please let me know.

Thanks for the timely reply!
I ended up configuring a reverse proxy cache with nginx (as per the arch wiki) later that day as it was a rare day that I had some free time. If I get some more free time I will attempt to switch the setup back to cpcache since it seemed like a better setup, especially interesting with the possibility of bringing clyde into the mix. I will consider this closed for now.
