Summary of k8s on m1:
- Rancher desktop -> rancher-sandbox/rancher-desktop#956 (m1 not yet supported)
- microk8s -> canonical/microk8s#2040 (close?) - not more clearly tracked
- minikube - kubernetes/minikube#12826 to avoid docker, and more generally other issues at https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+m1 . (main concern is avoiding any docker desktop usage due to licensing changes)
Then we’ve got the more general vm approaches, perhaps based off ‘multipass’, parallels etc
None are ideal for a quick simple out of the box experience
So another idea — use ‘KIND’. can m1 can run x86_64 containers? This could be run within ‘podman’ as it’s just a container EXCEPT that we’ve hit issues with the fragility of podman on MacOS more generally (even Intel), particularly networking …
Root cause is trying to address two issues
- Avoid using docker desktop due to licensing restrictions
- Support macOS on apple silicon (m1) as in new machines (alongside linux on x86_64 and windows/wsl2 on x86_64)
from egeria-docs.
Useful blog post on podman on m1 macs : https://edofic.com/posts/2021-09-12-podman-m1-amd64/
-> needs patch (may be integrated soon)
-> could be up to 50x slower for running x86_64 images

Discussed @ TSC 2021-11-17
- will add info on platforms/m1 to dojo/tuturial content to clarify current restrictions - remote linux may be an alternative option
- will continue getting feedback from m1 users (also post on slack to solicit more)
- Suggestion: Worth trying minikube

macOS is now configured and should work fine. closing
