I was having the same issue. I have a ~/.offlineimap.py file with a get_pass function, with a body:

return check_output("gpg -dq ~/.encrypted-pass.gpg", shell=True).strip("\n")

While in python2 check_output (from subprocess) return a string, in python3 it returns a bytes object. So striping with a string fails. I fixed my issue changing .strip("\n") with .strip(b"\n").

.offlineimap.py is loaded through the config setting pythonfile, and the get_pass function in that file is used by the config setting remotepasseval, which is used in offlineimap/repository/IMAP.py", line 585, which is the last but one line in @DamienCassou's traceback.

I hope this helps :)
