Just went through the closed items and this seems to be a duplicate (#7). (I had the issue due to a HX711 variant with different pinout: SCK and DOUT were swapped!) For what it's worth: a timeout counter seems IMHO a bit more reliable since it doesn't depend on overhead added by users in their code.

Yes I had forgot about that older issue. I ended up not implementing it as I didn't get any more feedback from the person that opened the issue.
The actual time required to perform tare is depending on the number of samples (size of data set) and the selected HX711 sample rate (10sps or 80sps), so the timeout value must be based on the selected data set size and 10sps sample rate (worst case). The suggested code in (#7) should work, but it needs to be tested. I'l see if I can do that in a couple of days.
