Hm, this shouldn’t be happening.

Can you tell me which site you used to perform the IP address lookup?

What device and iOS version are you using?

I'm on an iPhone 5 (6.1)and typed in "ip lookup" in the search and tried several of the sites. I tried several new identities and they all returned my Las Vegas ip. Update I just attempted again and all went very well. I'm not sure what happened, I'll let you know if it happens again. After visiting some sites and posting comment, the app freezes and I've been deleting and reinstalling the app. It's not a big deal to me but possibly there's a work around. When it freezes it will not give me a start page or identity.

Hm, for cases where the app "freezes" (basically on startup, it fails to get a connection, see #2), you can usually get around this by force-quitting instead of deleting and reinstalling the app:

  1. Close the app by pressing the "home" button.
  2. Double-tap the "home" button to bring up the "app switcher"
    menu at the bottom.
  3. Press and hold the Onion Browser icon in that bottom menu as
if you were going to delete the app. A "delete" icon will
show up in all of the apps in that menu.
  4. Press that "delete" icon for Onion Browser. This does not
delete the app from your phone, it only quits the app (and
not simply "pause" the app, which is what happens when you
    normally press the "home" button).
  5. Start the app again.

Going to leave this ticket open, though, since this "sometimes leaks IP address" issue is fairly major. Still going to think about it, though I haven’t heard of other cases where this has happened (since the initial release of Onion Browser, where I had a few bugs related to the proxy code). In cases where it doesn’t connect to Tor (like #2), it should just fail or freeze, the app shouldn’t be able to connect at all — so I’m still not sure how the underlying issue was happening.

I can confirm something similar happening. (Let me know if you want this filed as a separate bug).

I mistyped a domain name (not ending in .onion) and my Wifi router's domain not found error page came up. (My router hijacks NXDOMAIN and instead displays a "helpful" error page.) Unfortunately, right afterwards my phone lost connection with my wireless router and I couldn't get any more pages to load in Onion Browser at all. I have not been able to reproduce since.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1, Onion Browser 1.3.7 from the App Store.
