Mh. yeah It is indeed rather complex, however it might be possible for Advancements that don't come with any 'special rules'. To be clear by 'special rules' I mean all those rules that are ( or may be ) handled by the application.

That might be an acceptable solution. You could keep the current system and just add a "cross" or similar "delete" button in front of advancements which have no cascading effects/special rules other than their XP cost/gain.

Yes, but it's confusing and bug-prone. Another solution I was thinking of is to give an option to the user ( Rules -> Lock/Unlock advancements ) that, upon reading a warning message, permits to refund any advancement.
Of course that could break the Character but this way the user is more free to do anything.
Maybe I'll add an automatic character backup when you enable that, just to be safe :)
