I finally got around to testing this. I grabbed Windows Server 2016 Datacenter EVAL en us 14393 refresh and installed a VM.

I had to enable Test Mode of course, then used the Tungsten installer to install ZFS. I opened Powershell and created a pool. In theory it should be working fine.

You didn't say anything about running the installer.bat as Administrator?

from zfsin.

SurtursRevenge avatar SurtursRevenge commented on September 2, 2024

of course i run the installer.bat as administrator

i did everything as the manual supposed

Installing a binary release
Latest binary files are available on GitHub:

https://github.com/openzfsonwindows/ZFSin/releases

Download your preferred package.

Enable unsigned drivers:

bcdedit.exe -set testsigning on
Then reboot. After restart it should have Test Mode bottom right corner of the screen.

Start a CMDline as Administrator
Run ZFSinstall.bat
Click "Install anyway" in the "unknown developer" popup
Run "zpool.exe status" to confirm it can talk to the kernel
Failure would be:

Unable to open \.\ZFS: No error.
Success would be:

No pools available

And did you get the "unknown developer" popup? It is clearly not running the .SYS file, but we also do not get any feedback as to why. I wonder if WinDbg would should anything in the kernel log

when i run the installer the first time i got this popup.
The next times i tried i didn't ...
I also uninstalled and reinstalled and copyed the files manualy to system32 and driver store

Then I am unsure, the requirements for Windows are unknown to me. Could be DbgView might print something regarding the failure to load the .SYS file. Or, you could try building it yourself to load and see why it fails.

Thank you
I will try to build it on Windows Server when i have a bit spare time

Did you only test it on desktop os ?
Does this run on Windows 8.1 ?
Or do i have to use Windows 10 / Server 2016 ?

The only VM I have is the free dev Win10 x64 that Microsoft provides. Eventually, once ZFS becomes more usable I would have to go source other VMs to test it on. But at the moment it isn't quite at a place where you could use it for anything serious.

This is an old thread, but I'm having the same issue with the latest September binaries. I'm trying to install in a VM (normal Win10 installation, not the Visual Studio dev version). I have followed the instructions, enabled test signing, reboot, got an "installed successfully" when installing the ZFSin.inf via the contextual menu "Install" command. Reboot. Attempt to run zpool.exe status and get a "Unable to open .\ZFS: No error." - What can I do to get this latest binary up and running?

It is possible that Equinox requires devcon.exe for installation. But you should be able to install the Swagger release via ZFSin-Install shortcut :)
should be updated in readme though.
