Most of my published source code is in bash but I am afraid to admit, bash is not the best language to interface with Tor control protocol. There is tor-ctrl as an example on how to simply input Tor control commands into Tor using bash.
Tor control protocol also opens up for new risks (GETINFO address will reveal the real external IP of the Tor client) but there is also filtering available by onion-grater used by Whonix and Tails.
