Are you sure? I thought this might be a browser issue (since I haven't seen this behavior at all), but in both Chrome, Firefox 5 and IE 9 I get {"name":"mum","children":[{"name":"john"},{"name":"joe"}]}
for your example.
What are you testing on?

Ah, right. What you're seeing then is probably the old behavior of includeInJSON
, before this commit:
BACKWARDS-INCOMPATIBLE: 'includeInJSON' now takes a boolean, or a string.
'false' omits the relation entirely from the serialized object; a string can be used to include a single attribute (like the 'id' attribute).
Please try version 0.4.
