Is there some reason you're not using fetch? Try using :mem_cache_store and see if that works.

fetch? I just wasn't aware. (Can you tell that it's my first time with this stuff yet?)

using :mem_cache_store with read or fetch gives me "ArgumentError Exception: undefined class/module Something" So that's progress, I guess...

Referencing one of the other closed issues, this code finally worked for me:

Something
@something = Rails.cache.fetch('something_1') { Something.find 1 }

Thanks for the quick help!

Ok, so it was a class autoloading issue. In general, you shouldn't be caching Ruby objects in environments where you are using autoloading.
