I've added an initial piece. Conversion was pretty easy so far; a few regex calls to transform \begin{}...\end{}
into tags, a bit of manual re-writing (especially labels), a few nastier bits (escaping <, &
). Nothing wild.

fits but the module's logic breaks since we run MathJax later (and thus the ID does not exist yet; and even if we reverse it (e.g., on the server mathjax-node after markdown) we'll have to decide how to figure out the innerHTML) - 'manual' section references (Section~1.1).
