I'm using the latest prom/statsd-exporter docker image
from statsd_exporter.
Looking at the protocol description it is pretty explicit about counters being added. statsd is an event-centric protocol, so a message foo:10|c
represents 10 foo things having happened since the last message.
If your data source already reports the final value, you need to send a gauge type event, or push your counter to the Pushgateway instead of going through the statsd event model.
I'm afraid if we fix this for you we will break the exporter for everyone else.

@matthiasr One way to fix this would be to provide a way to match and override the type of the incoming data. We deal with similar issues for the SNMP exporter where the vendor spec is wrong.
