I just spent a little time looking into this --- it looks like summarize does handle a single sample (confirmed via tests):

It looks like we already have a single-sample guard in place, so perhaps this is actually a case of having no sequences in a sample?

This appears to no longer be an issue, from the Seaborn Changelog (v0.8.1):

Improved robustness of kdeplot() and distplot() to data with fewer than two observations.

I spent some time this morning feeding all kinds of bad data into summarize and was unable to break it.
