Oof, this is serious. We moved away from STrefs hour other reasons, and all
tests passed after an hours worth of work. I should have imagined (and
sometimes did worry) that was too good to be true...

The problem (I think) is that mutations to refs modify the env, and the
env is restored to the original after the lambda has finished executing.

Changing withEnv to:

seems to fix the problem. I'll submit a PR tomorrow with more tests.
