Hiya ✨

I am a PhD student with the University of Bristol, currently enrolled in "Computational Statistics and Data Science". I'm currently learning the basics of epidimiology, alongside the theory underpinning it's mathematical techniques.

My main research interests are healthcare modelling, healthcare waiting times estimation, causal health analysis and health equity.

I am proficient with:

  • Python
  • Java
  • Haskell
  • C++
  • R / RStudio
  • $\LaTeX{}$: $27^{5} + 84^{5} + 110^{5} + 133^{5} = 144^{5}$

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat maths, and I hope to be able to answer whatever questions you have.

Pronouns: she / her

Emma's Projects

anylogic-simulation icon anylogic-simulation

Simulation of an NHS-adjacent healthcare service, seeking to manage and minimise waiting times for incoming patients of several types. Produced in collaboration with Oliver Rees and Emma Tarmey.

confounder-handling-lit-review icon confounder-handling-lit-review

Literature review for my thesis on confounder handling within the broader topic of model selection for causal inference. Presented in reproducible fashion, specifying the search query and spreadsheet of results.

confounder-handling-sim-study icon confounder-handling-sim-study

Simulation study of various confounder handling techniques. Intended to examine the differences in performance and results between different solutions to the problem of confounding between covariates in causal health analyses.

emmafabulousshapetool icon emmafabulousshapetool

A well-documented R package, capable of calculating the areas and perimeters of various shapes.

fibonacci-method-gradient-descent icon fibonacci-method-gradient-descent

An implementation of the Fibonacci method for gradient descent, featuring a TKinter GUI for inputting the function / parameters to be examined and a matplotlib plot of the function and results.

fico-xpress-optimization icon fico-xpress-optimization

The XPress model code also present in my mixed-integer linear programming project, part of a wider project in gerrymandering the results of an election using code.

hej-varlden icon hej-varlden

A practice repo, containing my new million dollar app idea - it prints "Hello, world!" to command line in 2 languages.

hospital-waiting-time-estimation icon hospital-waiting-time-estimation

(Data expunged as of September 2022!) A predictive modelling tool used to refine population wide estimates of hospital waiting times to more specific "personalised" waiting times using discriminative factors in patient records and results from queueing theory. The code comprises a data parser, a nested multivariate queueing model and results.

icca-vasospasm-predictive-model icon icca-vasospasm-predictive-model

We seek to develop a predictive model for Vasospasm using the existing ICCA data-set. This is a project conducted in collaboration with Southmead Hospital Bristol, building on prior work done by McWilliams et al. in 2019.

model-selection-sim-study icon model-selection-sim-study

Simulation study of various variable selection techniques. Intended to examine the bias in parameter estimation in the context of causal health. In particular, we grapple with confounding, unseen confounding and bias amplification.

rocket-launch-nonlinear-optimization-ampl icon rocket-launch-nonlinear-optimization-ampl

A project in maximising the launch height of a rocket using AMPL mathematical modelling software, by means of modelling this an a non-linear optimization problem and employing a variety of solvers to generate solutions. We then discuss the sensibility of the solutions generated in the report.

simul8-simulation icon simul8-simulation

A simulation of a call-centre, towards a goal of minimising staffing costs, made in SIMUL8. Produced in collaboration with Georgia Mellis, Emma Tarmey, Dave Waddington, Hugh Warden and Chloe Yong.

the-diet-problem icon the-diet-problem

Code designed to generate minimum cost diet plans for Olympic athletes and non-athletes, given their variable intake requirements and a dataset of available foods from UK supermarkets.

trends-in-tourism-rstudio icon trends-in-tourism-rstudio

An investigation into trends within international travel / tourism between January 2020 and March 2020 conducted in RStudio, using data from the Office for National Statistics (https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/leisureandtourism/articles/overseastravelandtourism2020/2021-05-24).

uk2021censusexploration icon uk2021censusexploration

An exploration of the data provided by the ONS from the 2021 United Kingdon Census. In particular, we seek to compare results from 2021 to those from 2011 and 2001 to see how some trends have changed over time.

zombiesim icon zombiesim

Simulation study into inference for models with intractable likelihoods using Sequential Monte Carlo Methods. Implemented with R and utilising compiled C++ code to improve performance.
