Turns out it's a known bug in constraintlayout 2.0 alpha 3. It's fixed in alpha 4, you just need to use 2 until 4 is out.

I recall this error, but it should be solved, since I'm currently using
it. Let me dig and see what I did.

I'm on travel and my work laptop is blocking Android devices unfortunately, so I'll throw two blind possibilities.
Are you on 3.0.1?
Are you using app:orientation?

Yes, I am using 3.0.1 of your library. And yes, inside the <android.support.v7.widget.ToggleGroup /> I got the attribute app:orientation="horizontal"

doesn't produce this could you link a minimal repro project so I can bang

Sorry for the delay. I created a new GitLab repo with a minimal sample app. Still, the compilation fails. I hope this will help you to tear down the issue, If there are any other things you need, let me know.

Wow, didn't realize it happened without using the widget. The sample still
works, so it's clearly your updated androidx. As silly as the repro app
was, it helped, thanks. I'll have to dig into the androidx changes. The
widget has to live in pseudo Google land to use some private classes, but
we can at least namespace it out. I was hoping Google would scoop this up
at some point since the old widget is horrendous, so I kept it aligned to
asop as much as possible. However, it does run this risk.
