Note that there are some interesting dependencies between this question and what platforms we support (#1) and whether we try to be cross-platform or have platform-specific development (#2). If we go with platform-specific development this sort of implies that we need to have some sort of platform independent bridge or that plugin developers have to target different platforms (very bad, IMO).
